Rules Unique to Match Play – Team Format
Order of Play
· Tee Box – At the beginning of a match the Pro will toss a tee to determine which team has honors. The team with honors tees off first on each hole until they lose a hole, in which case the other team has honors and will tee off first. Repeat this process through the entire round. If a team hits out of order the opposing team can choose to let them play their shot as it lies OR make them re-tee and hit again (no penalty strokes).
· To Green – Once everyone has teed off, proper order must be maintained while playing any given hole. The player furthest from the pin goes first UNLESS that person wishes to let their teammate go before them which is perfectly legal. If the opposing team plays out of order you can choose to let them play their shot as it lies OR make them re-tee and hit again (no penalty strokes)..
*A player can play out of turn if the team that is “out” gives permission.
· On/Around Green – The player furthest from the pin goes first UNLESS that person wishes to let their teammate go before them which is perfectly legal. If the opposing team plays out of order you can choose to let them play their putt as it lies OR make them return it to its original position and mark it to wait their turn. It’s important to note that furthest from the pin goes first even if an opponent’s closer ball is NOT on the green yet.
Holing Out & Giving Putts
· Giving Putts – This is perfectly legal in match play. Make sure you are aware of the situation between all scores on that particular hole before giving a putt, it can cost you! In situation where you are given a longer putt because it you’re out of that particular hole, don’t automatically take just 1 stroke. Take the number of strokes if would have likely taken you to hole the putt from that location (20 foot putt given to you, you should probably consider that a 2 putt). Remember these scores are posted, you want them to be accurate.
· Completing a hole – There is no penalty for picking up in match play. If the other three players are putting for a net 4 and you, for whatever reason, are putting for a net 8 with no chance to tie or win a point then picking up might be the wiser choice so you can move on to thinking about the next hole. It’s your choice as you are conceding the high point by picking up. Also remember that your putt may give your partner a read so picking up may not be the thing to do. If you do pick up you would you your specific ESC score for posting purposes on that hole.
Misc.
· Rules Dispute – Unlike stroke play, you may not play two balls in the event your group is unsure of how to proceed. Call the Proshop and get a ruling before moving on.
· Reading your partners putt – You cannot stand directly behind your partner (in the line of the putt) during his stroke. After the stroke has been made you can position yourself as you wish to read the break. Penalty for standing directly behind your partner during a stroke is loss of hole (both lo & hi point)
· Wrong Ball – If a player hits the wrong ball it is loss of hole for that players point. If the ball belonged to another player in the group it gets replaced as close as possible to its original lie so that they can take their shot.
· Advice – Asking advice from anyone other than your partner is not allowed. This includes asking an opposing player what club they used for a shot, how much a putt broke, how fast the green is, etc. This also include the gallery. Penalty is loss of your point on that hole.
A few examples of what you are allowed to ask your opponents with no penalty are:
o What does that yardage marker say?
o What color is the pin today?
o How many strokes do you currently lie?
o Is the green clear?
o Where did your shot end up?
o Where did you buy those killer golf shoes?
Most importantly, have fun out there! Encourage and recognize good play for everyone in the group. No one is going to get to retire off of their winnings so keep it light and positive!
There has been a change for this year's tournament.
Caddies will not be allowed for the 2020 Spring Classic.
